Shaping your career: select your major wisely
April 20, 2022
Choosing a major is a serious decision that should not be taken lightly. It is the point in a student's life when they make a choice that will define them for the rest of their lives. It is a significant decision that will lead to certain jobs and industries, and it should not be chosen carelessly.
Here are some factors to think about when selecting a major:
One that corresponds to a planned career path
The first thing to think about when choosing a major is how it will aid you in your future profession. "What do I want to be?" is a question that can be answered in some cases.
This is the point in the professional process where a person can begin to piece together what they want to be when they graduate from college, the industry they want to work in, and the part they want to play in it.
Some majors, on the other hand, are more of a gateway to a wide variety of occupations than a stepping stone to a single job.
Know your personality type.
This is a little more discretionary zone, but knowing what kind of person you are might help you figure out what kinds of employment would be a good fit.
Being in industries that need a lot of people interaction would be a better fit for extroverted types. Being in industries with a lot of interactions may be more difficult for quiet, introverted types who thrive in more private settings.
Study what you enjoy, but make sure it is rewarding
It has been observed that the more someone connects with something they love, the better the long-term rewards will be. Because when there is great passion behind it, great work will be produced.
At the same time, bills must be paid in real life. It's critical to know what the median pay is for someone in the industry you wish to work in.
Find something you enjoy, do some research to see how much money you'll make doing it, and you'll have a solid notion of what major to pursue.
